Marin Cancer Institute's Dunning to Make Mount Shasta Climb
Alice Dunning of San Rafael has treated thousands of breast cancer patients in her three decades as a radiation therapist. The Marin County native has spent nineteen years serving patients at the Marin Cancer Institute.
During the past year, she treated two young women with breast cancer who attended high school with her son.
"I am seeing too many women being treated for breast cancer and I felt like I had the chance to make more of a commitment to help with the Breast Cancer Fund," she said. "So I am climbing Mount Shasta this summer to raise awareness and funds to help affect change that ends this medical condition."
Dunning is dedicating her climb to friend and colleague Joana Nemanich, a radiation therapist at MCI, who is a two time breast cancer survivor. An avid rower and hiker, Dunning climbed Mount Whitney with her sisters and has participated many times in the Mount Tam Peak Hike.
The Breast Cancer Fund, based in California, raises funds to identify, and advocate for the elimination of, environmental and preventable causes of breast cancer.
The 14,162 foot climb to the top of Mount Shasta is planned in July and Dunning joins 40 participants.
