Volunteering: Another Kind of Gift
The Volunteers
The men, women, and teens that give of their time and skills to Marin General Hospital are community members ranging in age from 14 to over 90. They come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Some are high-school or college students, some are retirees, and some are working professionals. They volunteer for a variety of reasons: Teen-agers often want to explore careers in healthcare. Working men and women believe in giving to their communities. Retirees want to remain active, and they add depth and experience to our care-giving teams.
As a volunteer, your contribution can make an important difference to both patients and their families.
Fundraising Branches
Of the 248 active members of the Marin General Hospital volunteer department, approximately 100 belong to one of the volunteer Fundraising Branches. The Branches include Founders (founded in 1959), Raccoons (1961), Storks (2000), and Friendship (2004). They raise funds for MGH patient care and promote good relations between the community and the hospital. Their fundraising also helps build facilities, purchase medical equipment, and assist the advancement of healthcare education.Recently, many members asked why they participated in the fundraising activities. The answer from all was: “We have fun raising money to help others.” In 1999 the volunteers celebrated the 50th anniversary of the program and pledged $1,000,000 to MGH over the next 10 years. Revenues from the volunteer Branches and volunteer retail operations have exceeded that goal—as of 2008, the total raised is $2,000,000.
